For 18 years, Twist has been serving some of the best entertainment in South Beach. It has been a staple for local and tourists alike. In the nightlife industry, that type of longevity doesn't just happen. It takes a lot of work and continuous reinvention. It also takes a strong commitment to the community. Twist also remains dedicated to the Latino community with Bar Five, a space that offers a rich Latin experience seven days a week. Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Joel Stedman of Twist to talk about some of their history and their future plans.
What do you think makes Twist so appealing after all these years?
Well for starters, Twist is completely different than it was in the beginning. At that time we had one dance floor that played one type of music. Now we have three dance floors playing today's house music, Pop video hits and a kickin' Latin room playing a little bit of everything from Salsa to Reggaeton. We have active VIP areas catering to our featured guest performers, local birthdays and celebrity pop-ins. But really what it all gets down to is a great atmosphere with friendly bartenders and great music.
Why the name “Twist”?
Have you ever been twisted? Enough said.
How has Twist supported the Latin community and why does it feel it's important to do so?
We knew from the beginning how important the Latin community was to the Miami Beach night life scene. Latinos are the very fabric of our community and their infectious energy, zest for life and fashion makes the South Beach experience different from anywhere else in the country. A few years ago we sat down with our dear friend, Adora, and decided to do an exclusive Latin format in Bar 5 on Thursday nights called Sabroso. We threw successful parties celebrating different countries of Latin America and the Islands. We continued the format with Aquiles spinning classic and contemporary Latin music throughout the weekend. Marco Perez developed a Spanish language Karaoke and entertainment night on Mondays and before you knew it, we had developed a very successful Latin format five nights a week in Bar Five. What once was a game room is now full nearly every night of couples twirling away to sexy beats and enjoying the best in Latin entertainment.
What does turning 18 mean to you and what are the plans for this year's anniversary celebration?
It is humbling to think about how many years we have been doing this. Richard has got some big plans for renovations this year. They are all being kept as quiet as possible until our big reveal at the anniversary party on June 29. We're certain everyone will enjoy the changes and freshened up space.
What is your Bar Five weekly lineup?
Thursday's start the weekend off with Sabroso, our longstanding Latin party hosted By Aquiles and Adora. Friday's and Saturday's are all Aquiles with superhot Latin Beats filling the place each night. Sunday's wind down a bit but are still fun. Pussila holds an amateur strip contest in the Bungalow that is not to be missed. Monday's end the weekend with Arrasando, a very packed Spanish language karaoke and entertainment night. Don't miss Sean Brady's Fab Karaoke on Wednesday's with Mario behind the bar serving his divine martinis with Nellie Norell on stage.
Be sure to celebrate Twist's 18th Anniversary celebration on June 29th. Arrive early to enjoy the open bar from 9pm to 11pm. And always remember, at Twist it's never a cover, always a groove!
