boys-in-perilAdora: Teddy,¿qué te parecen la nueva colección de pintura de Hernan Bas Exhibition, 'Boys in Peril', que se exhibe en la galeria Fred Snitzer en el Wynwood Arts District en Miami?

Teddy Behr: Oh, me encanta. Las pinturas tiene colores bastante fuertes, parecen un tapete. Al verlas, sentí como que me perdí en una selva hasta que encuentras a un joven que parece vivir en la riqueza profunda de tanto color.

Power in Numbers

Growing up, I was taught to always give credit where credit was due. Today, I make as much of a conscious effort to find the 'good' in things as I do in drawing attention to the "bad", since as humans we seem to have an almost computer-like accuracy for detecting and accentuating the negatives as we go through the day. I write this as an introduction to what can only be categorized as great news for the Latino gay community.

Adora: So Teddy, what was your favorite show on our last trip to New York? Mine was show about the Steins at the Met, specifically, Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas, the "out" lesbians that collected art in Paris in the 1920's when Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism were new and surprising everyone.

Adora: Teddy, are we going to Miami Beach's “Sleepless Night” arts festival on November 5th? It's such a huge event that it only comes around every two years and I don't want to miss it. It's a whole night of celebrating the arts in all of its forms, all over the beach.
Teddy: Yes! I love Sleepless Night and I'm so tired when it's over. People come from all over the world to share this special night. Octavio Campos told me his group, Campositions, is doing the Pig Show, a celebration of freedom, through the eyes of a gay pig stuck in a twisted story of the 50th Anniversary of the Bay of Pigs.

Adora: Teddy, can we go back to the Museum Of Contemporary Art this weekend to see the rest of the videos by Ryan Trecartin? We only saw 3 last time and they're so awesome. I want to see all of them; especially 'The Re' Search' and 'Roamie View History Enhancement,' the one with female shop assistants in corporate and shopping settings roaming backwards through time. Don't you love the sound of that?
Teddy: They are the coolest videos I've ever seen. They remind me of MTV, Jersey Shore and all those Real Housewives rolled into one – only ten times better. And all the characters are like in between boy and girl and it makes total sense. I like that.

Adora: Don’t forget we’re going to the movies tonight, Teddy!
Teddy: The movies?! Oh, you mean the Miami Beach Cinematheque.
Adora: Of course.

Adora: Teddy, have you heard about Aurora, the Afro Cuban singer? She's here in South Florida.

Teddy Behr: Um, I think so. Is she the one with the great voice, a clanging instrument and a mask?

Teddy Behr: Adora, did you see the video link I sent of David Wrojanowicz's “A Fire in My Belly” that was withdrawn from the show on Gay Portraiture at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in December?

Adora: Yes, it's amazing. Apart from the fact that it could have been made yesterday instead of in 1987, it's so fierce. Why was it pulled out of the exhibition?

Adora: Teddy, this month we should go to photographer William John Kennedy's exhibition of newly published silver gelatin prints of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. It opened at the Kiwi Gallery during the Basel Fair and will stay there until January.
Teddy: Oh, Robert Indiana! He's the one who made the famous “LOVE” sign from the '60’s! I didn't know he and Warhol were friends.

Adora: So Teddy, what did you like best at the Miami Beach World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM)?

Teddy Behr: Well, they have a lot of different things I liked, but those assorted ancient Chinese boxed jade dildo sets in assorted sizes kind of stood out. Having different sizes and a nice box to keep them in seemed so smart. I certainly haven't seen any sets like that in all the big sex emporium shops we have nowadays.
