I Can’t Get No Sleep, Dicen Que Soy and Vivir Lo Nuestro are just some of the many chart-topping songs that India, La Princesa de la Salsa, is best known for.
Earlier this year, the Puerto Rican native celebrated the success of Tacalacateo, featuring Italian DJ Peppe Citarell. The track debuted on the Billboard Dance Club Play (Billboard Club Songs), her first to do so since I Can't Get No Sleep (remixes) topped the chart in 2008.
I recently caught up with the music diva, who opened up about working alongside an icon for her new album, what she really thinks about her gay fans and what she loves about summer.
Congrats on the success of Tacalacateo. What exactly is it about?
It’s a party song, Baby! It’s all about having a good time.
You have several hit songs, is there one that stands out as your favorite, either in English or Spanish?
In English, I fell in love with a lot of projects that I did in my twenties and one of those projects was with Tito Puente, the Mambo King himself. He believed in me. I learned a lot from it and how versatile I can be.
Speaking of collaborations, tell me about the new single you’re working on with Peppe Citarella.
It’s called Listen, Listen. When it comes to production, I’ve been around the best producers of all genres. I am very much a part of my music, the production behind my voice, the background and so, this time around, it’s been like my baby.
What about the big project that has you teaming up with legend Juan Gabriel?
I have loved many artists in my lifetime, but Juan Gabriel is someone who I’ve always admired since I was a little girl. This is a dream come true. He is the Elton John of Latin music, but he’s more fierce. He has treated me like a queen. Juan is the epitome of the gay community. We are recording an album based on songs that he wants me to sing. He is beautiful. He makes me wish I were a man. Laughs
When can we expect to hear this album?
We are working on it now, so hopefully at the end of this year or the following year. He is a brilliant man. The songs are beautiful and stronger than ever.
The gay Latino community has embraced you for years. What would you like to say to your gay fans?
I love them very much. They are fabulous! I want to thank them for loving me throughout the years and appreciating me. I always wish them the best. The world knows that ya’ll are number one. We love you and we cannot live without you.
Summer is finally here. What do you love most about this season?
I like that everybody shows themselves a little more. People go to the beach and they like to eat at restaurants outside. It’s a time to let your hair down. But in Miami it’s like that all year long. Laughs.
