Singer/songwriter Tony Cruz has been entertaining audiences for years, thanks to his chart topping songs such as last year's “Gone is the Love,” a tune that hit number one on the Northeast Record Pool Chart. The track is a DJ favorite and has taken the club scene by storm. The Puerto Rican has even shared the stage with artists ranging from Patti Labelle to Flo Rida. Tony's many talents also include writing and recording commercial jingles. He recently dished with me about a moment he will never forget with a diva, his love for the gay community and what lies ahead.
“I Wanna be the One” is generating a lot of buzz. Tell me about it:
We premiered it at the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach.. We shot the music video during several live performances at WMC. On release day, March 22nd, it was almost immediately added to many radio stations around the U.S. and was added to playlists for retail chains nationwide, including stores like Foot Locker, Abercrombie & Fitch and more. Additionally, it was distributed to over 13 countries via The Music Plant record label and is already being played in clubs all over the world.
Do you have any memorable moments from the number of famous singers you've performed with?
I've been very blessed to perform with so many great and talented people. A kind of funny one early on in my career, Ms. Patti LaBelle, totally put me on the spot. I met her through my manager at the time and was given front row seats to her concert. This is most memorable to me because at the time I was totally shocked and a little terrified. I was in the audience and she called me up on stage and said, “Show 'em what you got.”
Recently, you performed at two pride events. Is there anything you'd like to say to your gay fans?
I have so much love for the gay community. Mostly, I would like to thank them for always embracing my music and me. In my opinion, the gay community is one of the biggest driving forces of dance music in the U.S. Early in my career I realized the power that this community has. These types of events are so much fun for me. It's different than performing in a club. I get the chance to talk to fans and even slow things down with a ballad or maybe do some Spanish music for them. To me, they are truly among the best audiences to perform for…always honest and ready to have a good time! I know that without their support I would not have come this far in my career.
Who is Tony Cruz when he's not performing on stage?
In addition to my recording career, I write and record commercial jingles and I am co-owner of Javi Productions Inc., an event and entertainment production company. When I'm not working, I really enjoy cycling, swimming and relaxing poolside with my “little girl” Ms. Molly Sunshine a.k.a. “the worlds most-spoiled white miniature schnauzer.” I love my very warm and tight knit Puerto Rican family. Most of all, I am a proud son, brother and uncle.
The music video for "I Wanna be the One" is currently in production and should be released in the next month or so. I have several performances lined up throughout the U.S. and am in discussions for a possible tour with other dance artists like: Pepper Mashay, Jennifer Carbonell, Jacinta and more. Currently, I am focusing on writing some new material for upcoming projects with the Music Plant Label.
